Susan M. Dray

Susan Marguerite Dray is an American expert on human-computer interaction and user experience who is a member of the CHI Academy and the User Experience Professionals Association. Dray is known for her work in user experience design and is a co-founder of SIGCHI , a human-computer interaction advocacy group for the Association for Computing Machinery . She is an international pioneer in the field of human-centered design and has given lectures and keynote speeches at conferences and symposia in the USA, Mexico, Europe, Africa, China, New Zealand and Australia. In addition, she has published numerous lectures and book chapters.

education

Dray earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Music from Mills College in Oakland , California in 1972 . She then earned a Master of Arts and a doctorate in psychology from the University of California in Los Angeles . Dray is a panel certified user experience professional.

Career

Dray's industrial research career began at Honeywell in 1979 , where she worked as a Human Technology Influences Manager and Senior Research Scientist. She later worked as Director of Human Factors at American Express and was one of the first to develop a usability laboratory for enterprise systems outside the computer industry in 1988 .

In 2014 Dray worked for four months at the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá on a Fulbright scholarship in Panama . She worked with students and faculty to introduce human-computer interaction that is now part of a new software engineering focus in the field of systems engineering. She helped create connections with both human-computer interaction professionals and user experience researchers across Latin America by further building the community and its influence in the wider international community.

Susan M. Dray is currently part of the Fulbright Specialist List, which promotes connections between US scientists, experts and their colleagues at host institutions abroad. The program awards grants to US lecturers and experts who have been approved for inclusion on the specialist list in selected disciplines in order to participate in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide. Shorter fellowships give specialists more flexibility to pursue projects that best suit their current academic or professional commitments.

Susan Dray was vice president of ACM SIGCHI from 2015 to 2019. There she helped establish human-computer interaction in developing countries such as Africa and South America. The current project, the SIGCHI Across Borders Initiative, captures the challenges that communities in the Arab world, Africa, and Latin America face and helps these groups become one strong community while at the same time finding ways like SIGCHI can help them meet these challenges.

Since 1982 Dray has been an active member of the CHI community, which spans the SIGCHI, User Experience Professionals Association and HFES organizations and helps connect people and organizations around the world. Dray is an active mentor and has had over 30 mentees, many of whom have successful careers abroad.

Dray is currently the President of Dray & Associates Inc., a small user experience consultancy . There she heads a team that plans and carries out user experience and design research on the main products of her international customers. She founded the company in 1993. Dray specializes in contextual user studies, has worked on all types of software and hardware, and has worked in 29 countries on every continent except Antarctica.

Awards and recognitions

Dray has received numerous awards over the course of her career, in particular the prize for her life's work in practice in 2015, the highest award given by SIGCHI . In 2017 she became an ACM partner “for co-founding ACM SIGCHI and for the worldwide dissemination of exemplary user experience design and evaluation practices.” She was also recognized by the User Experience Professionals Association, which awarded her the prize for her life's work in 2016. In addition, sue received the President Award for her role as Director of Publications from the User Experience Association. Dr. Susan M. Dray was awarded the SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and the User Experience Professionals Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for her leadership skills and influence on the industry. This makes Dray the only person in the industry to be so honored by both organizations. She is also a partner of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
