Sectional drawing and leaf of the pear variety Susanne

The pear variety Susanne was bred by Jean-Baptiste van Mons and sent to Johann Georg Conrad Oberdieck as one of 300 varieties in 1838 . It was part of a broadcast of 300 unnamed travelers , of which Oberdieck only thought about 25 were worth preserving. He described it for the first time in 1852 and took it in 1875 as no. 232 in his Illustrirtes Handbuch der Obstkunde Volume V pears .

The fruit is described as pear-shaped to bell-shaped, 2 " and 2½ to 3" high. The belly is usually nice and round. The chalice is quite small and often absent. With a length of 1 1/4 to 1 1/3 ″, the handle is woody and fairly thin and is usually pushed to the side by a bulge of meat. The skin is finely rough and changes from greenish to greenish-yellow as it ripens; the base color usually only shines through due to the rust coating . The pulp is yellowish white with a weak, wine-like, strong sugar taste.

In favorable years, the harvest time can start on September 15th, but usually not until the end of September to the beginning of October. The harvested fruits can be kept for five weeks.

The tree grows well and bears a lot of fruit. It makes little demands on the soil and can be cultivated on light and heavy soils.
