The Sutherland Falls on the South Island of New Zealand are among the highest and most impressive waterfalls in the country.

geography

The Sutherland Falls are located in the Fiordland National Park , 21 km southwest of Milford Sound and 8 km east of Sutherland Sound , north of the Franklin Mountains . The waterfalls are fed by the almost circular, 1000 m diameter Lake Quill , which is located directly above the waterfalls. The fall height of the waterfall is 580 m.

Origin of name

The waterfall was named after Donald Sutherland , a Scottish-born explorer who settled on the banks of Milford Sound in December 1877 and discovered the falls on November 10, 1880 while exploring.

Dispute over the highest waterfalls

Depending on your point of view, the Sutherland Falls are referred to as the highest waterfalls in New Zealand, as they fall into the valley as a continuous waterfall or the Browne Falls , which, in contrast to the Sutherland Falls , are much higher at 836 m, but rustle in different sections to the valley .

description

The Sutherland Falls are at the beginning of the Valley of the Waterfalls , a section of the Milford Track that is usually hiked through on the second and third day. Access to the Milford Track is limited to 40 people per day and can only be traversed in the direction of Milford Sound . The branch from Milford Track to the falls takes about an hour and a half. The waterfall is an attraction especially after heavy rains. The water falls over three saddles and ends up in a natural rock tub that is only a few meters deep. The resulting spray reaches almost 100 m on the ground. It is possible to go behind the waterfall. From the last step of the waterfall there is a view of the almost 400 m deep water.
