Suzuki GR Tempter 1983

The Suzuki GR 650 with the nickname Tempter (tempter) was built from 1983 to 1989 by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki . It is a cruiser with a 180-degree counter-rotating two-cylinder in-line engine with 651 cm³ and 36.8 kW.

engine

The engine was a further developed design derived from the GS450. It was characterized by a smooth run up to maximum speed. The technical innovations essentially consisted of a monoblock crankshaft with a variable flywheel. Thanks to this auxiliary mass, the engine had enormous power in the lower speed range and a run that was remarkably low in vibration for a twin engine, and in this respect put every parallel twin in the shade. From 3000 revs min −1 , the frictional connection of the flywheel mass was separated by centrifugal control, which resulted in spontaneous revving and good engine braking properties. Furthermore, the blow-through recirculation, the balance shaft, the double vault combustion chamber and the intake air duct should be mentioned.

Consumption is between 4.5 and 6.5 l / 100 km.

Model development

year model Changes / special features
1983 GR type 650X At their presentation. The first GR are only offered with a spoked wheel .
1983 GR type 650 D Two months later, the version with a light alloy cast wheel and pneumatically assisted telescopic fork for the Canada model followed.

The rest of the technology was identical in both versions: black cylinder engine with polished covers, high handlebars, a floating caliper disc brake at the front, a drum brake at the rear and an oil-damped full floater strut.

1984 GR type 650 XE After almost a year, Suzuki decided to discontinue production of the unpopular cast wheels, so only the model with spoked wheels remained in the program.
1985 GR type 650 XF The engine is now completely silver-colored, the transmission gears are hardened better to prevent pitting on the third gear pair , otherwise no changes.
1986 GR type 650 XG No changes except for new color combinations.
1987 GR type 650 XH Appears without any noteworthy changes.
1988 GR type 650XJ Presents itself as usual and goes into the last year in Germany, the sale is stopped.
1989 GR type 650 XK The GR will be exported to other countries for a few months before sales cease there too.

Characteristics

The GR 650 Tempter is considered a robust two-wheeler. The performance curve of the motor at relatively low speeds enables shifting lazy driving. In a contemporary test, the comfortably designed chassis and the good handling of the machine in tight turns with a relatively high degree of lean angle freedom as well as the stability of the fork were highlighted.

The design is characterized by the two-tone paintwork and the use of chrome parts.

Weaknesses of the GR

  • In almost 50% of all GR, especially those of the first years of construction, pitting occurs on the third gear pair.
  • The alternator and the regulator unit: The stator of the alternator often tends to dry up the charging current due to a charred winding. The regulator-rectifier unit often fails.
  • Membrane-controlled fuel tap: Even with minor leaks (visible when the fuel hose is disconnected), fuel runs through the intake ducts into the combustion chambers and, if the starter is operated for a long time, can easily bend the connecting rods if the piston rings are well sealed (fuel impact). It can also happen that gasoline runs down the cylinder wall into the oil pan and there dilutes the lubricant more and more, which inevitably leads to bearing damage and the engine running out.
