Sweet Sensation was a British soul band from the 1970s.

Band history

In 1971 the band Sensations formed around the two Britons Marcel King and Gary Shaugnessy from Manchester . Other members were the five Jamaican Junior Daye, Roy Flowers, Vincent James, Barry Johnson and Leroy Smith, and St. Clair L. Palmer of St. Kitts . In 1973 they won the New Faces young talent competition . A recording contract with juror and successful producer Tony Hatch and a change of name to Sweet Sensation due to the same name followed.

The first single Snow Fire was still unsuccessful in 1974, but with the second single Sad Sweet Dreamer , which Hatch wrote with Desmond Parton, they had the success that makes them known to this day. The song reached number 1 in England and was also able to place internationally. Their music was exactly in line with the popular American Philly sound . In most countries, however, they remained a one-hit wonder and in their home country, too, the second single Purely by Coincidence just missed the top 10. They could no longer place other singles in the charts.

In 1977 they competed in the national preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest , but only took eighth place with You're My Sweet Sensation . Then they lost their record deal and the band began to fall apart.

In the 1980s Marcel King went solo, but was unsuccessful with his single Reach for Love (1984). He died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 1995 at the age of only 37. Bassist Barry Johnson joined the new wave band Quando Quango in 1983 and later the reggae band Aswad .
