Sweet William is a band from Kerpen near Cologne.
history
The band was founded in 1986 by singer and guitarist Oliver Heuer. In terms of style, the band initially played music between punk, gothic rock and new wave. Over the years the style changed to psychedelic and electro rock. In 1990 the first EP To Have a Relapse was released on the Cologne label Big Noise Records. After two more releases with Big Noise, Sweet William signed a contract with Hyperium / Rough Trade Records. There the band released three albums.
The album Show , which appeared on Dion Fortune in 1998, made it to number 14 in the German alternative charts. Since 2001, Sweet William has released eleven self-directed albums.
In April 2010, was released by the French label d-monic the new album Brighter Than the Sun .
In September 2012, for the 20th anniversary of the album Kind of Strangest Dream, a remastered new version including bonus tracks was released on the French label Infrastition .
After ten years, Markus Gerlach left SW in 2013. Founding drummer Marius Nagel returned to the band. In May 2013 the new album Ocean was released , again on the French label d-monic. It is a concept album with a playing time of almost 75 minutes.
In 2015 d-monic.rec released a live recording of a concert in southern France, Valbonne 1995. The CD was released under the name Live on the French Riviera 1995 .
In June 2016 the album Time was released again on the French label d-monic Records. SW worked on the album for two years. After bassist Frank Breuer left in 2013, the new album was recorded and recorded exclusively by Oliver Heuer and Marius Nagel. SW will be 30 years old in October. To mark the occasion, there will be some publications in 2016. So is u. a. since March 2016 a book in English with the name 1986 - 2016 has been published. In the book you will find 44 pages, in addition to many photos, some anecdotes from the band's history. At the end of July 2016, the album Organic Shades was released on the Datakill label. The album contains mostly acoustic versions of well-known SW pieces as well as some new material.
In 2017, Sweet William began recording pieces from the band's early days that had never been recorded in the studio before. They were released in January 2018 under the title The Early Days 1986–1988 on D-Monic / Datakill Records.
In June 2019 the album Laughter Filled with Pain will be released on Datakill. It is a pure acoustic album with 8 tracks.
