history

Swerford Castle was built as a motte in the 12th century . It was positioned so that one could watch the ford over the Swere river and the village from it. The remains preserved today suggest that the castle was built during the years of anarchy , possibly for the same family that built Ascot d'Oilly Castle .

construction

The main mound has a diameter of 18 meters at the top and 30 meters at the base. The courtyard was 52 meters by 42 meters and protected by a deep moat .

The remains preserved today - exclusively earthworks - are considered a Scheduled Monument .
