structure

Swissmedic is a federal institution under public law that was created by the Swiss Therapeutic Products Act. It is independent in its organization and management and has its own budget competencies. The majority of the funding is provided through fees and, to a lesser extent, through payments from the federal government for the provision of public services. Swissmedic offers around 360 full-time positions.

tasks

All medicinal products for humans and animals may only be brought onto the market once they have been approved by Swissmedic in Switzerland. The institute is also responsible for the market surveillance of drugs and medical products.

When approving new drugs, the institute applies the internationally applicable criteria. The preparations may only be sold if their quality, safety and effectiveness have been adequately documented and checked. The necessary testing of drugs is time-consuming and often takes several months. If the criteria for authorization are met, Swissmedic issues authorization, determines the type of sale (prescription requirement / dispensing points) and approves the information for healthcare professionals and patients. Admission is at the expense of the applicant. It must be renewed every five years.
