Quotes

  • “I started cutting out pictures from travel catalogs, TV magazines or other printed media fairly early on and sorting large quantities of these collected pictures according to a typology made up. Today I do this part of the job electronically, I find pictures on the Internet and take a lot of photos myself. Strangely enough, this actually completely useless inventory does not contribute to a better understanding of the world shown, on the contrary. The puzzle world only becomes more complicated due to the ever-increasing amount of images and viewpoints. But sorting and comparing the images sometimes creates bridges between them. If you are lucky, this confrontation will create a new picture. This is exactly the picture I paint without my involvement. My work is the result of this obsessional clean-up. " Sylvester Engbrox, February 2008.
  • “When a hard drive is about to run out, a reconstruction program tries to save some of the data . My pictures try to repair and redefine a time / space relationship that got mixed up after a crash and to incorporate into the painting the remains, pictures to which their original world is still attached. Sylvester Engbrox, February 2008.
  • «His painting is typical of our era. Clearly figurative and embedded in a long pictorial story, it confidently opens our imagination. It shows more efficiently than any discourse how the liveliness of painting thwarted technological progress and consumed it with relish. " Gérard Gamand, Azart, September 2008.
  • "In the flood of images on the web, Engbrox is not looking for images that could satisfy any longing / lust / passion through deception, but rather those that enable him to methodically paralyze this longing by making its machinery visible." Jean-Luc Chalumeau, Sylvester Engbrox, exhibition catalog, 2008.
  • «The artist sees himself as a switching mechanism, his role is that of a tool or a machine. Nothing is explained in his pictures, neither erotic, nor guilt, nor suffering. The painter concentrates on making visible. To be more precise, it is a play . " Max Torregrossa, Sylvester Engbrox, exhibition catalog, 2008.
