View over the Houb to the ruins of Symbister

Symbister is a former settlement on the west coast of East Burra's Houss Ness peninsula in the Scottish Shetlands . It lies at the foot of a headland, the Taing of Symbister, which separates the West Voe inlet from the Houb Bay. In the northeast it is dominated by the 62 meter high Ward of Symbister .

The remains of the hamlet consist of the ruins of nine buildings - one of which, on the opposite side of the Houb, may have been a mill - and three enclosures . Three Burnt Mounds about 50 meters south of the village show that the area was already settled in the Bronze Age .
