features

butterfly

The basic color of the forewings of the moths varies from light gray to gray-brown. The middle field stands out clearly black-brown and contains noticeable, light-gray kidney defects . The ring flaws are blurred, the tenon flaws are missing. The wavy line is often only weakly indicated. Specimens from Northern Europe are usually more contrasted than those from the Alpine regions. With a wingspan of around thirty millimeters, the animals are one of the smaller species of owl butterfly. The hind wings are tinted dark gray-brown without drawing, somewhat lightened in the root area and show white fringes. The very dark colored underside of all wings is also characteristic of the species.

Similar species

  • The moths of Sympistis nigrita differ by a broader black-brown middle field of the forewings. The root field is also darker than in funebris , on the other hand in nigrita the fringing area and kidney flaws are occasionally dusty yellow.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Sympistis funebris has a boreal-alpine distribution. In the Austrian, Italian and Swiss Alps it can be found in the dwarf shrub zone at altitudes between 2000 and 2500 meters, while in some regions of the boreal zone it occurs in taiga- or tundra-like areas and on peat bogs .

Way of life

The moths are mostly diurnal and prefer to fly in the late afternoon. They can occur very frequently in their local range and can then be found in a generation from June to August. Little is known about the first larval stages, except that the leaves of various blueberry species ( Vaccinium ) are considered the main forage plants . The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

Sympistis funebris does not occur in Germany, so information on the Red List of endangered species is omitted.
