Symplecticum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Symplecticum (συμπλεκτικός "connecting") is a bone element in the skull of the bony fish (Osteichthyes), especially the ray fins (Actinopterygii). In the embryonic development it is divided from the ventral end of the hyomandibula - to the front, to connect with the quadratum , while behind it the stylo- or interhyale is divided to connect with the hyoid (hyoid bone ). In real bony fish (Teleostei) it is very rarely missing. This bone is not found in the Sarcopterygii because the hyomandibles are less important as a guide member of the jaw apparatus.
