Synagogue (Eschweiler)

The synagogue in Eschweiler , a city in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ), was built in 1890/91. The synagogue stood in today's Moltkestrasse, right next to the Protestant church.

The synagogue was inaugurated in September 1891 by the Cologne rabbi Abraham Frank .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire and destroyed by members of the SA . On the instructions of the NSDAP local group leadership, the fire brigade was not allowed to fight the synagogue fire.

Commemoration

Since November 1988 a large boulder in front of the Protestant church has been a reminder of the synagogue. The plaque bears the following inscription: “The synagogue of our Jewish fellow citizens was located on Moltkestrasse. She fell victim to the Nazi terror on November 9, 1938. "
