Synagogue (Tartu)
The synagogue in Tartu (German Dorpat ), a city in Estonia , was built from 1899 to 1902. The synagogue , destroyed in 1944, stood on Turu Street. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style according to plans by the architect Robert Pohlmann (* 1868) from Dorpat.
With the attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the entire area of Estonia came under the control of National Socialist Germany. Before the approaching German army, around 75% of Estonia's Jewish population managed to flee to the Soviet Union or Finland . Almost all Jews who remained in Estonia were murdered by the National Socialists by the end of 1941.
