The synagogue in Eberswalde , the district town of the Barnim district in the northeast of Brandenburg , was built in 1890/91. The synagogue was located in today's Goethestrasse.

history

After the purchase of a building plot on Schleifmühlenberg in Bismarckstrasse, today's Goethestrasse, construction began in 1890 according to plans by the Berlin architect Ferdinand Hermann Arnold Münzberger (* 1846). The synagogue, a three kuppliger building in the Moorish style with blue and white tiled facade, was inaugurated on September 1, 1891st The financing was secured exclusively through donations from the parishioners.

In 1931 a lightning strike set the synagogue on fire. The reconstruction began immediately afterwards, so that the synagogue could be inaugurated again in the spring of 1932.

During the November pogroms in 1938 , the synagogue fell victim to an arson attack.

Commemoration

On November 9, 2013, the Wachsen memorial site at the site of the former synagogue was opened to the public in the presence of Federal President Joachim Gauck and Stephan Kramer , General Secretary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and the President of the Brandenburg State Parliament, Gunter Fritsch .
