The reinforced concrete synagogue with stone cladding was built according to plans by the architect Francesco Morandi . The building is dominated by a central dome .
Second World War
On November 3, 1943, SS men stormed the synagogue and forced the custodian (they took his children hostage) to summon the congregation for a meeting. The approximately 50 members of the community who arrived were arrested immediately and then deported to Auschwitz , where they were murdered.

A Jewish Museum was set up on the upper floor of the synagogue in 2004 when Genoa became the European Capital of Culture .
