history

Jews have been recorded in Jindřichův Hradec since the 13th century. The Jewish community flourished in the 19th century when it had a membership of over 300 people.

In 1801 a great fire also destroyed the synagogue , soon afterwards the new church was built and expanded in 1867. The Jewish schoolhouse stood next to the new synagogue.

After the murder of the Jewish population by the Germans during World War II , the synagogue was empty. It has served the Czechoslovak Hussite Church since 1952 .
