Memorial stone for the destroyed Lünen synagogue

The synagogue of Lünen stood at Kirchstrasse 30 in the large district of Lünen . In 1811 the synagogue was built with a classroom and an apartment for the caretaker.

During the November pogroms in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SA and SS people and the entire inventory was burned on the market square. The fire in the synagogue was extinguished by the fire brigade, so that the building survived the pogroms slightly damaged. In the Second World War , however, it was completely destroyed by bombing.

Today, a memorial stone on the former site reminds of the Lünen synagogue. Today the Sankt-Georg-Kirchplatz and the Stadttorstraße are located in this area. The first mention of Jews in Lünen was in 1544.
