Synagogue (Mellrichstadt)
The synagogue in Mellrichstadt , a town in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld ( Bavaria ), was built in 1881. The synagogue was at 50 Hauptstrasse.
time of the nationalsocialism
On Friday, September 30, 1938, the synagogue was devastated. The violence came from a group of Sudeten Germans who were then staying in Mellrichstadt. The original intention was to beat up the Jewish residents on the way to the synagogue that Friday. Because the Jewish residents had been warned, they canceled the service. The door was broken open and people entered the synagogue. They smashed the entire interior and rituals.
During the November pogrom of 1938 there was nothing left to destroy in the synagogue. Only the foundation walls remained, on which a bank building was later built. When the property was rebuilt a few years ago, the foundation walls were also removed.
Commemoration
There is a plaque with the following inscription: "Hatred and arbitrariness destroyed this place of worship in 1938".
