Synagogue in Welyki Mosty

The synagogue in Velyki Mosty in the Ukrainian Lviv Oblast was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is a ruin.

history

The synagogue was built around 1900. At that time there was another synagogue. This was badly destroyed in the First World War and demolished after the war. The new synagogue, which was probably not yet completely finished at the time, was partially damaged, but then repaired.

During World War II , many Jews were burned alive in the building by the German occupiers.

After the war, the building got a new roof and was used as a warehouse for animal bones for several years. After the roof of the main building was covered by a storm in the 1950s, the warehouse was abandoned. The building has been empty since then and is falling into disrepair.

architecture

The synagogue is a brick building and consists of the main building and a narrower and lower synagogue vestibule. On the north side there is a single-storey building that serves as a warehouse and workshop for tombstones. It was probably once the Jewish bathhouse .

The main building is almost square (16 × 16 m) and almost 8 m high; the vestibule measures approximately 8 × 16 m.

Inside there are four pillars that support the ceiling. The structure is reminiscent of the architecture of the nine-field synagogues built in the early 17th century, such as the Great Maharscha Synagogue in Ostroh and the Great Suburban Synagogue in Lemberg .
