The synagogue of Werne stood on Markt 13. It was built in 1816, devastated during the November pogroms of November 9-10, 1938 and demolished in 1944. A memorial plaque was erected as a reminder.

In the files of the Historical City Archives Werne it says: "The local synagogue is newly built, and in good condition and owned by all Jews". A Jewish settlement has been documented here since September 2, 1554; After the civil equality through the Jewish edict in Prussia in 1812, to which Werne belonged after the dissolution of the Upper Monastery of Münster , the synagogue was built by the seven Jewish families (five percent of the population) resident at the time in 1816 and the Jewish school a few decades later.

Buildings and inventory

The synagogue at Markt 13 was a simple building. The entrance door, a simple wooden door, was reached by a few steps. The door was framed by tall windows to the left and right. The benches inside faced east. Eight women's benches were on the north side. To the left and right of the entrance and in the middle of the western wall there were three men's benches. In front of each seat there was a container for religious objects. In the middle towards the east wall was the Eternal Light , a Torah shrine with a parochet and a raised prayer and reading desk .

The interior was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938. Albert Heinemann saved a Torah scroll. He gave them to the German-Jewish community “Hebrew Tabernakel” in New York City.

The building was bought by a citizen from Werne and demolished around 1944. A photo from 1978 shows the foundations of the synagogue. Today there is a restaurant there.

In the text Jews in Werne it is noted that around 1816 the annual salary of the cantor with free food was 50 Reichstaler .

The former Jewish school was to the left of the synagogue. There are two memorial plaques on this building today.
