The former synagogue in the Taunus town of Bad Camberg was located at Schmiedgasse 4 . Only a plaque reminds of them . It was torn down by the National Socialists during the November pogrom in 1938 .

history

A synagogue (" Judenschule ") was first mentioned in Bad Camberg in 1770. It is not known whether this was a prayer room in one of the Jewish houses or whether it was a separate building.

In 1837 the Jewish community acquired the former brewery at Schmiedgasse 4 (often mistakenly called Schmiedegasse), where the synagogue was established in 1838. This had 41 male and 24 female places. After it was torn down in 1938, the area remained undeveloped.

Commemoration

On the initiative of the Historisches Camberg e. V. a memorial plaque was placed on the site of the former synagogue on November 8, 1991. It bears the following inscription: And have profaned all the places of your name to the ground. - Psalm 74: 7b. - The Camberg synagogue stood in the courtyard of this property. The synagogue was desecrated during the pogrom night on November 9, 1938. At that time there were 69 Jewish citizens living in our city. Some were able to emigrate in time, others were murdered in concentration camps. The fate of many is uncertain. In 1945, at the end of Nazi rule, there were no longer any Jewish citizens living in Camberg. - May this plaque exhort to stand up for the rights and dignity of all people at all times and under all conditions.
