Synagogue in Daugavpils

The synagogue at Cietokšņa 38 in Daugavpils , the second largest city in Latvia , was built in 1850. The synagogue , used again today as a house of worship, is a protected architectural monument .

With the attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the entire territory of Latvia came under the control of National Socialist Germany until July 8, 1941. This began the annihilation of almost all of the local Jewish population.

With financial support from the children of the painter Mark Rothko , the synagogue building was renovated in 2005/06.

A museum dedicated to the Jewish history of Daugavpils has also been set up in the building.
