Wehrheim synagogue

Wehrheim, Zum Stadttor 11, former synagogue

The synagogue in Wehrheim was inaugurated in 1856 and is now a private home. For historical reasons it is a listed building .

A Jewish community in Wehrheim was first mentioned in 1662. It had had a synagogue since the 18th century at the latest, which was housed in a house on the main street and, as they say, in a simple chamber. One of the three ritual baths attested in Wehrheim was probably in the same house.

The head of the Jewish community, Samuel Hirsch, built the new synagogue in Untergasse (today: Zum Stadttor) with the serial number 222 in 1845. The half-timbered house facing the street contained a prayer room with a gallery and an annex building 14 by 10 feet in where the Hirsch family lived. In 1858 the synagogue was inaugurated.

In the era of National Socialism , the Jewish community Wehrheim ended. During the November pogroms of 1938 there were no longer any Jews living in Wehrheim, so the former synagogue was not affected. Today only a small cellar window with a double Star of David reminds of the former use of the house.
