Signe Munch Siebke
Signe Munch Siebke (born January 27, 1884 in Trondheim , † October 2, 1945 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian painter.
biography
Signe Munch Siebke's parents were the novelist Anna Munch nee Dahl and the teacher Peter Ragnvald Munch. After her parents divorced, Signe Munch grew up with her father and was not allowed to meet her mother, who was guilty of divorced under the law at the time. She entered into a professional marriage, advocated by her father, to a career officer, which she followed from one garrison to another for several years. During this time she began to paint in secret. Through the mediation of her uncle Edvard Munch , after the separation from her husband, she was able to take lessons from Pola Gauguin , the son of the famous Paul Gauguin and a friend of Edvard Munch. In 1918 she attended the Oslo State School of Applied Arts and studied in 1919/20 at the Oslo State Art Academy with Christian Krohg and Halfdan Strøm . From then on she painted full-time and married the theater man Einar Siebke (1893–1944).
When Norway was occupied by German troops in 1940, Munch Siebke had just collected all of the pictures she had scattered in galleries in order to prepare a large special exhibition. It never came to that. Einar Siebke was supposed to be brought to a concentration camp in Germany because of his activities in Norwegian resistance groups, but died on the crossing because the ship on which he was with other prisoners sank. Signe Munch was interned in the Grini penal camp in Norway until the end of the war. Her health was ruined afterwards, she died shortly after the liberation. Her pictures are lost - a Gestapo department had used the Siebkes' house as their headquarters, Munch Siebke found it completely devastated, the pictures had disappeared.
Signe Munch's grave has been preserved. It lies in the Siebkes family grave in the Vestre Gravlund cemetery in Oslo. A grave inscription reminds of Einar Siebke.
