Syndicate of Sound was an American garage rock band that existed from 1964 to 1970. With Little Girl they made a US-wide hit in 1966.
Band history
Syndicate of Sound was founded in San José , California in 1964 . The original band members were Don Baskin (vocals, guitar), John Sharkey (guitar, keyboards), Larry Ray (lead guitar), Bob Gonzalez (bass) and John Duckworth (drums).
After a less successful single, they recorded the song Little Girl on January 9, 1966 in San Francisco , which became another hit in the US. Meanwhile, Larry Ray had been replaced by Jim Sawyers. The group recorded an album and performed on stage and on television with numerous stars including Paul Revere & the Raiders , the Young Rascals and the Yardbirds . Little Girl reached position 8 on the charts in the summer of 1966. The successor single Rumors made it to number 55 in October 1966, the next singles could no longer be placed.
After Duckworth was drafted into the military, there were some line-up changes and a label change from Bell to Buddah Records . In 1970 Syndicate of Sound broke up after they had one last smaller chart hit with Brown Paper Bag .
From 1990 Baskin, Gonzalez, Duckworth and Sawyers appeared again as Syndicate of Sound, Ned Torney played the keyboards. After Torney's death in 2005, the remaining band members remained active as a quartet.
In 2006 Syndicate of Sound was inducted into the San José Rocks Hall of Fame.
