System design kit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A system design kit ( SDK , in German about system development package , depending on the manufacturer also reference design kit , starter kit or evaluation kit ) is an offer of matching hardware and software to create a computer system - mostly for the area of embedded systems - for its individual Developing needs.

Such SDKs are mainly offered for microcontrollers . They typically consist of a finished prototype board (or delivered as a kit ) with the microcontroller and a minimal or typical environment of peripheral electronics and, above all, interfaces .

The package also includes a software development kit that can be used to create software for this microcontroller. The software development kit typically runs on a personal computer that is connected to the prototype circuit board via a debug interface (e.g. JTAG ).

The third component in the package usually includes documentation for the hardware (including the prototype board) and software of the processor. Today this documentation is often delivered in the form of text files on the CD for the software, previously in the form of books or loose-leaf collections in folders.
