Töss Bridge (Rorbas-Freienstein)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
old Töss bridge

The Tössbrücke (also known as the Römerbrücke or Alti Brugg ) connects the villages of Rorbas and Freienstein in the canton of Zurich .

Before 1806, the large footbridge over the Töss stood on the site of the Töss Bridge , which is first mentioned in a document in 1521. A flood around 1551 severely damaged it. In the armed conflict between the Austrians and the French around 1799 it was completely destroyed. The new Töss Bridge was built from 1806 to 1808 according to plans by master builder Johannes Volkart . The stone arch bridge is the oldest existing Töss bridge and at the same time the only masonry bridge over the river. A substantial part of the building material comes from the ruins of Freienstein . A renovation took place in 1961 and 1994. Today it is under federal protection.
