The Tübinger Studentenwerk eV is a non-profit association that offers students of the University of Tübingen affordable accommodation and services. A distinction must be made between the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV and the Studentenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim A.d.ö.R. , which operates the refectories, cafeterias and day-care centers.

history

The Tübinger Studentenwerk was founded on August 6, 1920 as Tübinger Studentenhilfe e. V. founded by university members and citizens of Tübingen to alleviate the economic hardship of students after the end of the war. In 1920, following an AStA resolution, an academic career counseling center was created as part of student aid , which the government ultimately provided with annual support for a career counselor. Starting in the winter semester 1920/21, students were charged a fee of 10 marks for AStA and student aid. In April 1921 and December 1922, two student dormitories were opened by the Studentenhilfe. The first dormitory was built thanks to generous donations from American Quakers , who also financed the student kitchen in the dormitory for a year, so that up to 1,200 lunches could be served daily. After the acquisition and renovation of the second dormitory, 700 more students could be fed every day.

The self-help organization of the Tübingen Student Aid was one of the first of its kind and a model for similar institutions at other universities. She set up the cafeteria, provided inexpensive living space in dormitories, organized a student job agency and reduced student living costs through services. In the 1920s, due to the housing shortage, the student aid hired several women who ran the student rooms so that the Tübingen housewives would not have any additional work and they would be more willing to rent rooms. After the inflation emergency had been resolved , the subsidized businesses of student aid such as laundry, shoemaking and bookbinding were dismantled, while the printing and typewriter offices, which generated surpluses, were retained. On July 6, 1930, the student aid was renamed the Tübinger Studentenwerk . In the same year she set up a day care center for female students, which was made possible by support from the state, the churches and donations from associations and individuals.

The Reichsstudentenwerk was established as an institution under public law through an ordinance issued by Reich Science Minister Bernhard Rust on November 2, 1934. Like all existing student unions, the Tübingen student union merged with the “Reichsstudentenwerk”. The new managing director was Georg Kress, who from April 1935 to March 1937 carried out a “renovation” of the student union.

After the Second World War, the Studentenwerk Tübingen was re-established as a registered association in 1946. Since the establishment of the Tübinger Studentenwerk - an institution under public law (today Studentenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim ) in the 1970s, there have been two student unions in Tübingen.

Dormitories

The dormitories of the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV are all self-administered. This means that the residents largely regulate the rules for living together themselves. There are full dormitory assemblies as well as internal committees and offices, which in turn have their interfaces to the association committees. In particular, the social orientation in all areas is important for the sponsoring association. For example, the dormitory places are not allocated according to a waiting list, but primarily according to social criteria such as parental income or the number of siblings - in order to provide affordable accommodation to students from low-income families in particular.

Geigerle

The Geigerle is located at Charlottenstraße 8, it consists of three buildings with up to three floors. The buildings are arranged around a garden with a pond. The Geigerle is particularly known for the Geigerlefest that takes place once a semester. Although there is no active advertising, the entire dormitory fills up with numerous guests every time. The Geigerle is the dormitory that undergraduate students move into.

Annette Kade Dormitory

The Annette-Kade dormitory is located at Mohlstrasse 44, it is an architecturally specially designed building. In the middle there are two atriums, the rooms are arranged on two floors around the atriums. In terms of age structure, it is predominantly the students in the main course who live in the “Kade”.

Münzgasse

Münzgasse 13, detail

The Münzgasse 13 is located opposite the collegiate church in a central location. However, the building is owned by the Studentenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim AdöR, from which the Studentenwerk eV rents the building and sublet it to the residents. This particular construction can be traced back to a dispute in which residents had occupied the house because otherwise they would have been thrown out. With the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV stepping in as an intermediate landlord, the living space could be secured for the residents at the time.

Commercial enterprises

The proceeds from the activities of the business operations of the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV are intended to benefit the dormitories. B. enable renovations. Nevertheless, the requirement for business enterprises is to offer affordable offers for students. An association membership is not necessary to be able to use the offers.

Driving school

The driving school is operated with driving instructors from an independent driving school from Reutlingen. Despite this construction based on the outsourcing concept, the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV tries to offer an attractive offer for students with its prices. The driving school is also open to non-students. The driving school specializes in driving licenses and converting foreign driving licenses. There are also motorcycle and moped driving license classes as well as the BE driving license class for trailers up to 750 kg.

Marquartei

The Marquartei is a student pub on the outskirts of Tübingen's old town. Drinks and food are offered. The staff is also mostly recruited from student circles. From the purchase in the 1990s to 2007, the pub was operated by the Tübinger Studentenwerk eV itself. Now the Marquartei is leased. Music events take place regularly.
