A door opener is an electric, remote control in the door frame (usually over a plug-in bolt-latch lock installed) device with electromagnetic lock traps unlocking. Door openers are often combined with intercoms or surveillance cameras in order to be able to check the identity of the person in front of them before opening the door. Because of their noise, they are colloquially called buzzers .

This type of door opener is not to be confused with devices that are used to automatically open doors. These are also known as automatic door drives , automatic doors or automatic door systems and are often similar to door closers that are mounted above the door leaf.

function

The latch of the mortise lock built into the door leaf engages in the latch of the door opener when the door is closed. When contact is made (by remote control), the lock of the door opener latch is released and the door can be opened.

After the door is closed, the re-locked latch of the door opener holds the door, i. H. the latch of the mortise lock, tight again. There are the following types:

  • Working current door opener: the opening takes place only during the contact, i. H. as long as the buzzing tone can be heard in the door opener, working current door openers are available with 100% duty cycle , i.e. H. Using a timer, the door opener could release the door for several hours or continuously. In the event of a power failure, the door is not released in contrast to the quiescent current.
  • Closed-circuit door opener: the latch of the door opener is held in place by a certain minimum current, the so-called "closed-circuit current". In the event of a power failure or power failure, the door can be opened (escape door opener).
  • Door opener with locking: the door can be opened after a certain time, or the door remains unlocked after the contact is made until it is opened once.

The electric door opener does not replace the locking of the door with a bolt , but is simply an additional device. It is primarily intended for daytime operation, while at night the door in question is locked by actuating the mortise lock. A door that is only kept closed by the latch of the door opener is not considered locked under insurance law.

In many cases, the door opener has a mechanical release that can be operated with a small lever. When unlocking is active, the door is simply snapped open to open. For example, you cannot lock yourself out in a single-family house, or you do not need to unlock or use the door opener on a heavily frequented door in a multi-party house during the day.

The door opener with chain hoist is a rare variant that is almost no longer found today. It is not built into the door frame, but is in a box on the inside of the door, roughly in the middle of its width. It is connected to the wall next to the door (on the hinge side) by a chain and to the door lock by a second chain. When the door is closed, a pull is created on the chain attached to the wall, thereby tensioning a spring in the mechanism of the door opener. When the opener is actuated electrically, this spring pulls the chain attached to the lock and thus opens the lock latch. At the same time, the door is pulled a little towards the wall by the second chain and, ideally, opens a crack. Of course, this variant only works in conjunction with a corresponding lock that does not have a latch but a pull button. The length of the two chains must also be exactly right, otherwise the mechanics will not work properly.

Other meanings

The term door opener can also be used in a psychological context. This in the sense of benevolence or a certain opinion in the sense of the behavior that generates the actor . Examples are the distribution of promotional gifts in marketing , populist views advanced in politics in order to pursue other purposes of forming opinions , or techniques of conversation.
