Turkish five
The Turkish Five ( Turkish: Türk Beşleri ) were the first generation of professional composers of classical music in Turkey:
- Cemal Reşit Rey (1904–1985)
- Ulvi Cemal Erkin (1906–1972)
- Ferid Alnar (1906–1978)
- Ahmed Adnan Saygun (1907-1991)
- Necil Kâzım Akses (1908-1999)
The term was first coined in 1939 by Halil Bedii Yönetken based on the group of the Russian Group of Five . What the composers have in common is that they were all born at the beginning of the 20th century and were sent abroad to study music at a young age for the purpose of forming a classical Turkish national music in the service of the "music revolution".
