The T-43 was a prototype of a medium tank of the Red Army from 1942/43.

history

The T-43 was designed and developed as the successor to the T-34 . It should combine the advantages of the T-34 and eliminate its disadvantages. Therefore the gun turret was enlarged and the armor reinforced. The turret front armor was 90 mm, the front plate was 75 mm thick. To save space, the fuel supply has also been reduced and the chain width reduced so that it no longer protruded over the covers.

All efforts to make the T-43 more manoeuvrable, however, failed, as it was six tons heavier than a T-34 Mod. 1942. The higher weight and the smaller tracks ensured that the T-43 was inferior to the T-34 in terms of its maneuverability and top speed and thus never got beyond the prototype status. Two prototypes were made, the first with the 76.2 mm F-34 cannon , the second with the 85 mm SiS S-53 cannon in a new turret. The second prototype was even heavier than the first. After tests in Kubinka, it was decided not to mass-produce the T-43. The newly developed turret was used in the T-34/85. The experiences from the construction of the T-43 flowed into the development of the T-44 .
