TSOS

TSOS ( T ime S haring O perating S ystem ) was one of the operating systems of the mainframe computers of the Spectra 70 series of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA).

RCA was in the computer business until 1971. It was then sold to Sperry Corporation ; Sperry offered TSOS under the name VS / 9. Since the mid-1970s, a further developed version of TSOS has also been offered by Siemens under the name BS2000 .

While Sperry (or Univac after the company was renamed) no longer offered VS / 9 since the early 1980s, BS2000 - now called BS2000 / OSD - continues to be marketed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers .

TSOS was the first operating system to support virtual addressing of the main memory. In addition, it was characterized by the fact that, in contrast to IBM's OS / 360 - and its successors MVS , OS / 390 and z / OS - the user interface for time sharing and batch processing was identical. This made operation much easier compared to the IBM products.

The early systems of the 1960s ran on TOS (Tape Operating System). Siemens named it for its 4004 series tape operating system (BBS). The TDOS (Tape-Disc Operating System) or tape-disk operating system and disk operating system followed later. This was followed by BS1000 and BS2000, which were later also delivered to RCA as compensation for the licensing.
