Tabai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tabai (Greek Tάβαι) was an ancient city in the Asia Minor region of Caria , on the border with Phrygia and Pisidia . It was near today's Kale in the Turkish province of Denizli .

To the north of Tabai, which was on a hill, stretched a plain named after the city, in which there were other small settlements. The French epigrapher Louis Robert researched inscriptions and historical geography of the area in his Corpus La Carie II .

In Roman times (from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD) Tabai minted its own coins. In late antiquity it was the seat of a bishop. The titular Tabae of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the diocese .
