Louis Robert

Louis Robert (born February 15, 1904 in Laurière , Haute-Vienne , † May 31, 1985 in Paris ) was a French epigraphist , ancient historian , numismatist and archaeologist .

Life

Robert studied from 1924 at the École normal supérieure after he had already attended lectures by the epigraphist Maurice Holleaux as a pupil , whom he described as his most important teacher. In 1927 he received a scholarship from the École française d'Athènes , 1932 lecturer (directeur d'études) for "Historical geography of the Greek world and Greek epigraphy" ( geographie historique du monde grec et d'épigraphie grecque) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études , an activity that he carried out until 1974. In 1939, Robert succeeded Holleaux as professor for Epigraphie et antiquités grecques at the Collège de France , and in 1948 a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . He was also a member of scientific academies and societies in numerous countries. From 1956 to 1964 he headed the Institut français d'archéologie in Istanbul. In 1946 he was elected to the British Academy and in 1961 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Services

Robert is still considered to be one of the “grand masters” of Greek epigraphy, to whom he devoted almost five hundred studies in the form of essays, anthologies and a few monographs. One focus was the Hellenistic and imperial epigraphy of Asia Minor , where he also carried out extensive field research, for example two research trips on behalf of the Archaeological Institute of America in 1932 and 1939, as well as excavations in Amyzon in Caria (1949/1950) and in the oracle site Klaros (1950 –1961, together with Roland Martin ). He also devoted himself to inscriptions from Greece and other parts of the ancient world, as well as repeatedly to the pierres errants ("carried away inscriptions"). Again and again Robert emphasized the value of geographical and regional knowledge for the classical scholar. He always tried to embed the inscriptions in their context, emphasizing, for example, the liveliness of Greek culture during Hellenism and the imperial era. He also published numerous works in the field of ancient numismatics .

From 1938 to 1984 Robert and his wife Jeanne (1910–2002), who was also his regular collaborator, published the Bulletin épigraphique , an extensive column in the Revue des études grecques , in which all new publications on Greek epigraphy are displayed and published every year partly critically commented and supplemented. The Bulletin has been edited by a group of scientists since Robert's death.

In his work Robert was able to draw from a deep familiarity with the ancient sources. On the basis of his knowledge and his box of inscriptions that were published scattered about, he was able to prove that editors and commentators of inscriptions had sometimes serious omissions, which he often did in a rather sharp tone. However, he occasionally had to expose himself to the accusation of hardly publishing comprehensive syntheses himself, but mainly detailed and special studies. The corpus of the Greek inscriptions of Caria, which he tackled together with his wife, remained a torso with only one volume published. However, he also published monographs, such as his standard work published in 1940 on the gladiators in the east of the Roman Empire.

Robert's teaching at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and the Collège de France shaped generations of (not only French) epigraphers. Even after decades, his publications are regularly used by research.

Robert's essays have been compiled in numerous anthologies (in particular Opera minora selecta. 7 volumes, 1969–1990), insofar as they did not appear in collections from the outset, such as the Hellenica series . Recueil d'épigraphie, de numismatique et d'antiquités grecques (13 volumes, 1940–1965, partly with Jeanne Robert).
