Lorsch Tobacco Museum
The Tabakmuseum Lorsch is a national museum in Lorsch (Hesse). It shows the cultural history of tobacco (tobacco cultivation, cigar production, consumption), which was an important economic factor in agriculture and trade in Ried in southern Hesse from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century .
The museum is next to the monastery museum ( administration of the state palaces and gardens of Hesse ) to the adjacent Lorsch monastery and the folklore museum ( Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt ) one of the three departments of the museum center Lorsch . The building of the museum center, a former canning factory, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Lorsch gate hall . The 1500 exhibits of the tobacco museum extend over 600 m² in the ground floor, gallery and basement. The tobacco museum goes back to a photo competition and the subsequent special exhibition of the Heimat und Kulturverein Lorsch in 1981.
