Table Top Racing is an arcade - racing game developed and published by Playrise Digital Ltd. The game was originally developed for the Apple iOS platform on January 31, 2013; the game for Android devices was subsequently launched on January 23, 2014. A PlayStation Vita version was released on August 5, 2014. Due to positive reviews, Playrise announced a sequel to the game for game consoles, which was released in May 2016 under the name Table Top Racing: World Tour for PC , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One .

Gameplay

Table Top Racing uses elements and environments similar to the Micro Machines game series ; the gameplay itself is very reminiscent of games from the Mario Kart series. The player controls a miniaturized, customizable vehicle in familiar surroundings. The races take place on oversized elements such as a kitchen table, a work bench in the garage, a Japanese restaurant, or a picnic table. The obstacles on the racetracks are also known objects, such as baguettes, glasses, plates, tools, or ice cubes. Similar to the game Mario Kart, depending on the game mode, the player has power-ups such as speed boosts or rocket attacks.

In the app, the player has two control options; The tilt control with accelerometer support (if you tilt the device to the left or right, the vehicle also steers to the left or right) and the sensor-free control (the half of the screen is tapped for left or right control). Both control options use automatic acceleration and deceleration.

On the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms, an online multiplayer mode is also offered, where you can put your skills to the test in a duel with players from all over the world.

Game elements

The object of the game is to finish first in each race. There are the following game modes:

  • Pursuit: There is a vehicle on the racetrack that must be caught up and rammed within a certain time limit.
  • Combat race : The race must be won against up to 7 opponents, on the track there are several power-ups which enable action-packed duels.
  • Pure race: The race must be won against up to 7 opponents, without power-ups, through pure skill.
  • Drift : The race is driven alone, there are points requirements for the first three places, if these are exceeded, you have won.
  • Hot lap : The race is driven alone. You have 90 seconds to complete the best lap and the time is measured. If you beat the best time, you win.
  • Time trial : The race is driven alone. The player is given a total time for the race, which must be undercut in order to win the race.
  • Elimination : The race is driven against up to 7 opponents, with the last placed player being eliminated from the race on each lap. The aim is to finish the race and not to be eliminated early.

Some racing modes offer players power-ups to fight. The following power-ups are available in the game:

  • Guided missiles : These missiles seek their target automatically, the hit rate depends on the distance to the victim and the obstacles on the route.
  • Normal missiles : These missiles fly straight ahead, precise aiming as well as the calculation of the future position of the enemy is necessary in order to hit them.
  • Bomb : The bomb is dropped behind the vehicle and is particularly suitable for shaking off pursuers.
  • Acid bath : The acid bath is also placed behind the vehicle; in contrast to the bomb, this remains for a limited time and can hit several targets, but the victims lose less time.
  • Speed Boost : This allows the player to reach a higher speed for a short time.
  • Ice beam : This weapon can hit several targets, which are subsequently frozen and slide on in the direction of travel. This weapon is particularly effective in turns.
  • EMP attack : This weapon hits all enemies in a small radius around your vehicle and paralyzes them for a short time. In addition, this weapon is suitable for defense against rocket attacks.
  • Atomic bomb : This weapon is probably the most effective weapon and is therefore rarely given, usually to one of the last-placed players. This weapon hits all opponents reliably and slows them down for a while.

In addition, there are wheel weapons, more precisely wheels, which have special abilities that can be used for a limited time:

  • Bling wheels : If these wheels are attached to the vehicle, the player receives higher winners' rewards for won races.
  • Peace Wheels : This special ability takes the weapons they have collected from all opponents and thus briefly ensures peace in the race. The weapon needs a regeneration time to be able to be used again.
  • Protector wheels : These wheels build a protective shield around the player, which for a short time fends off all attacks. This weapon also has to recharge after it has been used.
  • Spikey wheels: all cars that come too close to the wheels are slowed down by protruding tips. This weapon is permanently active, but can be temporarily destroyed in the event of excessive contact.
  • Jump Wheels : These wheels allow the player to jump. These can be helpful for shortcuts or evasive maneuvers. This ability also needs a regeneration time.
  • Drift wheels: With these wheels, the traction is greatly reduced, which allows the player long drifts and fast corners. These wheels are essential in drift races and are permanently active during the race.

To make the game more interesting, the player receives prize money, more precisely coins, for winning races. These coins serve as a means of payment in the shop to purchase upgrades for your own vehicle or new vehicles. Upgrades serve to personalize the vehicle, you can improve the maximum speed, control, acceleration and armor, mount new tires with special capabilities on the vehicle, or apply a new paint job. The game also offers in-app purchases that allow players to convert real money into game currency.

development

The game was originally developed for the Apple iOS platform, almost a year later the application was also offered for Android devices. At Gamescom 2013 a version for the PlayStation Vita was announced, which was released on August 5, 2014. Due to its great popularity, a sequel to the game under the name Table Top Racing - World Tour was launched on May 3, 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game has been available on Steam since May 18, 2016.

The development team is known, among other things, for co-developing the racing game series Wipeout .

Reviews

Table Top Racing (App)

Most of the reviews for the mobile app were very positive:

Claudia Wiegand, app expert at Chip, describes the app as follows: "Table Top Racing takes the best of classics like" Micro Machines "and" Mario Kart "and mixes it into an extremely fun combat racing game. Unfortunately, the app makers are Playrise Digital, an English indie start-up from Liverpool, has switched to a freemium model, that's the only small minus point. "

Jan Knoop from GamePro criticized: "Two capital mistakes destroy Table Top Racing's chance of pole position in iOS racing games: The long-term unpleasant controls and the currently unconvincing multiplayer mode are hardly excusable for a racing game that has the ambition to be in the top League. Table Top Racing is especially worthwhile for experienced players who want to quickly play a game against the AI - beginners should think twice about buying it. "

Table Top Racing (PS Vita)

The PS Vita version of the game received poorer reviews, largely due to the lack of innovations and the underutilized potential of the game:

Benjamin Schmädig from 4Players rated the game with 52% (sufficient), with the reasoning: "It's just not enough: Even as a mobile phone game, Table Top Racing only rolled through the finish line in midfield - in view of the hardware options, Vita is even more important . The short career hardly deserves the name and individual challenges stretch the game instead of loosening it up. I lack precise control as well as freedom of choice when tuning. I only experienced small highlights when an approaching rocket dissolved in my well-adjusted electric shock. Also the time trial can be entertaining when a dozen turbos provide a little adrenaline rush. The first PlayStation runabout from Burcombe's new studio isn't even bad. It's just terrifyingly irrelevant. "

Table Top Racing - World Tour

The reviews for the latest game in the series are widespread, the lack of a local multiplayer mode was heavily criticized:

Kieran Harris from Gamereactor rates the game with 6/10 points and writes: "Visually, the game looks bright and dynamic [...] Later in the career, the tracks are simply recycled too often with only minimal changes to increase the level of difficulty. [...] However, once the carts are pimped up, the races will be far too easy and you can easily beat the competition. " However, the game also has weaknesses, which he criticizes as follows: "A lack of local multiplayer, uninspired pick-ups and the few different settings mean that the fun racer cannot keep up with the competition. The adrenaline-charged races make for a few laps a lot of fun - but unfortunately it fades very quickly due to the lack of variety. "

Michael Krosta from 4Players rates the game with 46% and explains: "As with Mario Kart & Co, you collect the unimaginatively designed and randomly drawn gagdets such as [...] In addition, the driving behavior within the vehicle fleet is a bit undifferentiated and it falls generally difficult to develop a feeling for the car [...]. "

Awards

The game received several awards, including being named "iOS or Android Game of the Week" by Pocket Gamer, "Slide To Play" and "What Mobile" as "Game of the Month". In 2013 it was also nominated as "Best Game" for the TIGA Awards. Playrise Digital was nominated for "Best Publisher" at the 2013 Mobile Entertainment Awards and the Appsters Awards. In addition, Playrise Digital won the "Best Startup" category at the 2013 TIGA Awards.
