Taira no Shigehira
Taira no Shigehira ( Japanese 平 重 衡 ; * 1158 ; † 1185 ) was one of the sons of Taira no Kiyomori and one of the chief commanders of the Taira clan. After the Battle of Uji (1180) , Shigehira ordered Nara to be burned down (see Siege of Nara ).
After defeating Minamoto no Yukiie in the Battle of Sunomata , he became commander in chief of the Taira armed forces and was given command of 13,000 men.
Four years later he was defeated and captured in the battle of Ichi-no-Tani and then handed over to the monks of the Tōdai-ji temple, which he had burned down. He was then beheaded.
