The Talaia de Son Jaumell , also known as Torre de Son Jaumell, is a historic watchtower on the coast of the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca that has only been preserved as a ruin . The name "Son Jaumell" is probably a corruption of Jaume II (Jacob II), who founded the nearby town of Capdepera in 1300 .

location

It is located in the municipality of Capdepera in the northeastern part of the island on the summit of the 271 meter high mountain Es Telégraf in the immediate vicinity of the coast. It can only be reached via narrow mountain paths. The name of the tower is sometimes used synonymously as a name for the mountain.

Architecture and history

The round tower originally built in the 16th century, around 9 meters high, was used as a watch and signal tower as part of a warning system against pirate attacks . If an enemy ship came in sight, the tower guard alerted the neighboring towers and the hinterland that were erected within sight by means of a signal fire (fresh wood during the day for a smoke signal, at night dry wood for clearly visible flames). In the hinterland, bells called men together for defense. The rest of the population sought protection in additional defensive structures.

Parts of the outer wall of the tower have been preserved.
