The Odelouca dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Odelouca ) is located in the Faro district of the Algarve region of Portugal . It dams the Odelouca river to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Odelouca ). The small town of Monchique is about 6 km northwest of the dam. About 8 km southeast of the Odelouca dam are the Arade and Funcho dams .
The dam is used to supply drinking water. The first project studies were carried out from 1997 to 1999. Preparatory work began in 2001; the dam was then built between 2007 and 2009.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is an earth embankment dam with a clay core and a height of 76 m above the foundation level . The crest of the dam is at a height of 106 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 415 (or 418) m; the width of the dam at the Krone is 11 m. The volume of the structure is 2 (or 2.3) million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with three gates. A maximum of 1513 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The diversion tunnel with which the Odelouca was diverted past the dam during the construction period serves as the bottom outlet.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 102 m (max. 102.35 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 7.8 km² and holds 157 million m³ of water - of which 128 (or 134) million m³ can be used . The minimum congestion destination is 72 m.
A tunnel (length 8.15 km, diameter 2.13 m) leads from the reservoir to the Funcho dam .
