The Arade dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Arade ) is located in the Faro district of the Algarve region of Portugal . It dams the river Arade to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Arade ). The town of Silves is about eight kilometers southwest of the Arade dam. The Funcho dam lies upstream .

The Arade Dam was built from 1944 to 1956 during the reign of António de Oliveira Salazar . It is used for irrigation and, to a lesser extent, for generating electricity. The dam is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Silves, Lagoa e Portimão .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a clay core and a height of 50 m above the foundation level (42.5 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 65 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 246 m and its width 9 m. The volume of the structure is 654,000 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates on the left side of the dam. A maximum of 30 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 500 m³ / s via the flood discharge.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 61 m (max. 62.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 1.82 km² and holds 28.389 million m³ of water - of which 26.744 million m³ can be used. The minimum stowage destination is 34.5 m.

power plant

According to APA , the Arade power plant produces an average of 1.35 million kWh of energy per year. Other sources claim that the dam is only used for irrigation or that the power plant is out of order. According to the operator's verbal information on March 30, 2015, electricity was once produced, but no longer.
