The Poio dam ( Portuguese Barragem do Poio ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Portalegre district . It dams the Nisa , a left (southern) tributary of the Tejo, to a reservoir. The small town of Nisa is about four kilometers west of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1926. The construction was completed in 1932. The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by HIDROTEJO, Hidroeléctrica do Tejo, SA .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 18 m above the foundation level (15 m above the river bed). The length of the top of the wall is 278 m. The volume of the dam is 8,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates. A maximum of 110 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.
Reservoir
At the normal storage destination , the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.1 km² and holds 6.4 million m³ of water - of which 4.6 million m³ can be used.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 1.5 MW, the Poio power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal . The average annual production is 4.8 million kWh . Two Francis turbines are installed.
