The Tamar Valley ( German : Tamar Valley ) is a valley through which the Tamar River flows in the north of the Australian island of Tasmania in the state of the same name.

The Tamar Valley stretches from Launceston in a north-westerly direction about 50 kilometers to George Town and then another ten kilometers to the confluence of the Tamar River in the Bass Strait .

Wine route

The Tamar Valley Wine Route runs behind Launceston, mainly on the left bank of the Tamar River on both sides of the A7 motorway to Beaconsfield. It then heads east over Kayena and Rowella past the Batman Bridge on the right bank of the river to Pipers River and Pipersbrook, then south back to Launceston.

A good 40 percent of the Tasmanian premium wine is produced in the more than 30 wineries that have settled there since 1800. The grapes include varieties such as Pinot Noir , Chardonnay , Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc .
