content

Tamo daleko is sung by a Serbian soldier stationed in Corfu . The armed forces of Serbia had withdrawn to the island via northern Albania and were being fought by the Central Powers .

The soldier sings about his home village, the destroyed church in which he married, and the disastrous retreat of his comrades, many of whom died of cold, hunger and disease.

Further meaning

The song is also one of the favorite nostalgic songs of the Serbian immigrants who moved to America after World War II . For these people, the song refers to the distance from their home country.

original

Version 1

Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.

Tamo daleko, gde cveta limun žut,
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.

Tamo daleko gde cveta beli krin,
Tamo su živote dali zajedno otac i sin.
Tamo su živote dali zajedno otac i sin.

Tamo gde tiha putuje Morava,
Tamo mi ikona osta, i moja krsna slava.
Tamo mi ikona osta, i moja krsna slava.

Tamo gde Timok, pozdravlja Veljkov grad,
Tamo mi spališe crkvu, u kojoj venčah se mlad.
Tamo mi spališe crkvu, u kojoj venčah se mlad.

Bez otadžbine, na Krfu živeh ja,
ali sam ponosno klic'o, živela Srbija!
ali sam ponosno klic'o, ŽIVELA SRBIJA!

Version 2

Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je ljubav moja.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je ljubav moja.

O zar je morala doć ', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'ou krvavi boj.

Tamo daleko, gde cveta limun žut,
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.

Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.

Bez otadžbine, na Krfu živeh ja,
i opet veselo kličem, živela Srbija!
i opet veselo kličem, ŽIVELA SRBIJA!

Version 3

O zar je morala doć ', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'ou ljuti boj.

Tamo daleko, daleko kraj mora,
Tamo je selo moje,
Tamo je ljubav moja.

Bez otadžbine daleko, daleko živim ja,
i opet kličem burno, živela domovina!

O zar je morala doć ', ta tužna nesrećna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'ou ljuti boj.

Tamo daleko, gde cveću nema kraj,
Tamo su najdraži moji,
Tamo je pravi raj.

Tamo daleko kraj Save, Save i Dunava,
Tamo je varoš moja,
Tamo je moj rodni kraj!

German translation

(of version 1)

There, far away, far from the sea.
My village is there, Serbia is there.
My village is there, Serbia is there.

Far away where the lemons bloom.
There was the only way the Serbian army could go.
There was the only way the Serbian army could go.

Far away where the lilies bloom.
There father and son gave their lives together.
There father and son gave their lives together.

Where the Morava flows quietly.
My icon and my family celebration stayed there.
My icon and my family celebration stayed there.

There where Timok Veljko's city flows through,
There they burned the church where I got married young.
There they burned the church where I married young.

Without my homeland, I live in Corfu.
But I proudly say: LONG LIVE SERBIA!
But I proudly say: LONG LIVE SERBIA!
