Tan Chin Tuan

Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan (born November 21, 1908 in Singapore , † November 11, 2005 ) was a Sino - Singaporean manager, former head of the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) and philanthropist .

Life

Tan Chin Tuan started his career at the age of 17 as a clerk at the bank counter. In 1942 he became managing director of OCBC in the Bombay branch and in 1966 chairman of the board, an office he held until his retirement in 1993.

In 1951 Tan was appointed by the British government as Vice President of Parliament in Singapore. At the time, this was the highest political position ever achieved by a Singapore resident.

Tan was known as a risky banker, but he was very involved in social projects. Through his foundation, Tan Foundation , he significantly supports the National University of Singapore (NUS).
