  • The Tanana Valley State Forest , founded in 1983, is one of two state forests in Alaska , along with the Haines State Forest .

The 7325 km² forest area in the Alaska Interior lies almost entirely in the catchment area of the Tanana River and extends for around 425 km from near the American-Canadian border in the east to Manley Hot Springs in the west. The altitude is between 84 m in the river valley and over 1500 m in the Alaska range .

Almost 90% of the forest area is forested. The predominant tree species are paper birch , American quivering poplar , western balsam poplar , black spruce , white spruce and East American larch .

Mining, gravel, oil and gas extraction and grazing are permitted within the state forest. The primary commercial activity, however, is logging.
