Tandragee Castle
Tandragee Castle ( Irish Caisleán Thóin re Gaoith ) is a castle in the village of Tandragee ( Tóin re Gaoith ) in County Armagh, Northern Ireland . George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester , had it built in 1837 as his family residence in Ireland . The Duke of Manchester acquired the property through his marriage to Millicent Sparrow (1798–1848).
history
During the Plantation of Ulster , the castle became the property of Sir Oliver St John , Lord Deputy of Ireland . He had the former fortress of the Ó hAnluain ( O'Hanlon ) clan rebuilt. In the Irish Rebellion of 1641 , however, the O'Hanlons tried to regain their lands. As a result, the castle became a ruin and remained so for the next 200 years.
Alexander Montagu, 10th Duke of Manchester , who was born in Tandragee, sold the castle and estate in the 1950s . The buyer was a Mr. Hutchinson , a businessman from Tandragee. Today the castle houses the offices of the Irish potato chip maker Tayto and there is a golf course on the property.
