Strangford Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Loch Cuan ) is a castle at a height above the harbor of the village of Strangford ( Baile Loch Cuan ) in County Down, Northern Ireland . It is located on Strangford Lough ( Loch Cuan ) across from Portaferry Castle . It was probably originally built in the 15th century, but most of the building that remains today dates from the end of the 16th century. The residential tower is a State Care Historic Monument in the townland of Strangford Lower in the District of Newry, Morne and Down . Her popularity has grown since she was used as a film set for the television show Game of Thrones under the well-known Winterfell name .

construction

Strangford Castle is a small residential tower from the end of the 16th century, but has a bricked-up door in the 15th century style on the first floor. So it is presumably the conversion of an earlier residential tower. Today's entrance in the north-east wall is a reconstruction , the location of which was determined by the machiculi between two consoles and the inclusion of a bolt that secured the original door. The first entrance was probably on the first floor. It is a small, three-story residential tower without vaults or stone stairs. There is an oven on the 1st floor. The room on the ground floor is only through small loopholes exposed. On the roof there are very beautiful battlements , also with loopholes. The original ceilings, like their current reconstructions, were made of wood.
