The medal “For Bravery” ( Russian Медаль “За отвагу” ) was initially a Soviet award that was donated on October 18, 1936. The medal is (e) awarded to members of the Soviet armed forces, predominantly from the army, navy, border troops and internal troops, as well as in exceptional cases to civilians for personal bravery in the defense of the fatherland . The medal was awarded around 26,000 times during the Soviet-Finnish Winter War and around 4 million times during the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1945.

The medal of bravery was reintroduced by Russia in a new edition on March 2, 1994 as an award ( medal of bravery (Russia) ), almost identically except for the writing СССР .

Appearance and wearing style

The silver-colored medal with a diameter of 37 mm shows a T-28 tank on its obverse and three aircraft flying westward in the sky. In between or below is the three-line, deeply embossed and red lacquered inscription За / отвагу / СССР (For / Bravery / Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The lapel , on the other hand, is smooth and shows a stamped award number.

The medal is worn on the upper left side of the chest of the recipient on an elongated pentagonal fabric-covered clasp, the basic color of which is gray. Its hem is light blue. The associated interim brace is of the same quality.
