Taphone
Taphon , also tapone ( Thai : ตะโพน , originally Sa-phon) is a double-headed, horizontally played barrel drum that is used in classical Thai music .
The two membrane surfaces with a diameter of 22 and 25 centimeters are played with the palms of the hands and fingers. The drum often has a woven pattern in the middle of the body as an ornament.
The taphon is used almost exclusively in the classical Thai orchestra for wind and percussion instruments, the pi phat . This orchestra accompanies the dance dramas Khon and Lakhon as well as the shadow play Nang Yai . It enjoys a kind of religious esteem, so it is placed in a wooden frame a little higher and receives offerings.
Similar drums in form and function are the Cambodian sampho and the Javanese kendang .
